An Evening with Jonathan Byrd at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church: Poetry, Essays, Songs, Conversation

The Faith & Art Series of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church is proud to present Jonathan Byrd for an evening of poetry, essays, and songs on Friday, March 2nd at 7:30 p.m.

Jonathan Byrd is a preacher’s son, a Gulf War veteran, and an award-winning songwriter from Carrboro. He is known for literary and outsider songs of love, life, and death in the small towns and byways of America. He has toured widely in the US and in Canada and Europe.  Folk legend Tom Paxton discovered Byrd’s music online: “What a treat to hear someone so deeply rooted in tradition, yet growing in his own beautiful way.” The Chicago Tribune called Byrd “one of the top 50 songwriters of the past 50 years.”

Lately, he has been drawn to poetry and essays in addition to his music. He just published his first book of poetry, You’ve Changed, and his essays can be found on his blog. His writings underscore a deep sense of the sacred and issue a call to live life with as much honesty as you can muster.

Jonathan will bring it all: poetry, writings, and songs to St. Matthew’s. Tickets/Reservations are $15 and available through the church office (919-732-9308welcome@stmatthewshillsborough.org) and at the door.

The St. Matthew’s Faith and the Arts Series began in 2010 as a result of the church’s desire to be more intentional in their support of the arts and artists; to challenge and deepen faith through exposure to the arts; and to use sacred space as a setting for artistic expression.
